Luis Cañas Winery

Effort, tenacity, passion for things well done and a clear philosophy oriented to the vineyard. There are four generations that have written the history of our family, “Luis Cañas Family”.

For more than a century, our family has been dedicated to the production and sale of traditional young wines made by the carbonic maceration method (whole clusters). These were made in the Cueva de los Curas, an old winery dug into the earth and which is still part of the area's landscape today.

In the past, the wines were transported by Carlos Cañas, father of Luis Cañas (now 87 years old), in carts pulled by mules crossing the Sierra Cantabria and the Montes de Vitoria to areas bordering Bilbao and San Sebastián, more than 100 kilometers away. Villabuena.

In 1928 the founder, Luis Cañas, was born. A man of a perfectionist character, a worker like few others and whose motivation was always the pride of achieving the best quality in his vineyards and as a consequence in his bulk wines, conquering the palates of the great wine merchants, who at that time were located in the Bilbao Alhóndiga

It was in 1970 when Luis Cañas went on the market selling bottled wines from the grower, which until then were sold in bulk. This same year and not far from the Cueva de los Curas, we created the winery that bears our name and into it we poured our passion for the grape, the true creator of the highest quality wines in Rioja Alavesa.

1989 marks a new milestone in the future of our winery, when Juan Luis Cañas, son of Luis Cañas, takes the reins of it. At 33 years old, he brings new air to the winery, maintaining the work philosophy and family tradition thanks to his perfectionist and non-conformist character. This means that he is not content with making very good young wines but also begins to make new wines, increasingly promoting aged wines.

In 1994 we inaugurated a new, modern winery equipped with the best production systems. Since then, at Bodegas Luís Cañas we have not ceased our efforts, constantly improving and expanding our facilities in order to continue improving the quality of our wines.

The personality of Juan Luis, one of the most restless and innovative winemakers in the country, the experience and good work of the winery team have made it possible for our wines to be recognized worldwide with the most prestigious awards.

We start from a conviction, “only the best grapes can make the best wines”, hence our obsession with the vineyard.

In the heart of Rioja Alavesa, here are our vineyards, sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria. Without a doubt, one of the best wine-growing areas in the world. The vineyards, mostly of small surface area and advanced age, are characterized by being located on lands of calcareous clay origin of low fertility, for the most part on slopes and terraces, with an ideal microclimate and an orientation that make them unique.

As a result of these conditions, we obtain low production, small clusters and grapes but excellent quality. Almost 900 plots are necessary to complete the approximately 400 hectares between own vineyards and controlled by the winery.

Respect for the environment and the effort of each and every one of the human links involved in the process is key to transforming the benefits of rational viticulture into success. Rational viticulture is an agricultural system that optimizes natural resources and mechanisms to the maximum, guaranteeing the future of viable agriculture. Biological, chemical and other techniques are carefully chosen and balanced with environmental protection in mind. The use of herbicides, synthetic fertilizers and aggressive products or practices is strictly prohibited in order to preserve the environment and have strains with a strengthened immune system that allows them to defend themselves. To carry out all this work, we have a specific field department made up of an agronomist, an agricultural technical engineer and oenologist, and 8 workers who are authentic vineyard artisans.

The objective is to have a healthy land (without a doubt, the best legacy we can leave to our future generations) and, as a consequence, healthier fruits and wines.

The wines intended for the production of the Reserva come from vineyards in which the average age is 40 years old and which, after production, are tasted and the type of wood most suitable for aging is defined.
